The new A 3100 HV Power Amp

The A 3100 HV

Should you hear an amplifier? We think you should hear the music and let us keep the amplifier from singing along.

The A 3100 HV is not merely a power amplifier. It is an instrument of uncompromising physics, designed with a single purpose: absolute transparency. Engineered to operate in perfect synchronicity with reference pre-amplifiers, it defines the ultimate boundary of what is electronically possible, solely to preserve the fragile, emotional content of the recording.

It has not been built as an integrated compromise. Instead, deliberately separated power and pre-amplification components remove all physical and thermal restrictions on each unit: A pre-amplifier demands a sanctuary from interference to protect the most fragile, microscopic audio signals, whilst a power amplifier demands an unyielding foundation to deliver massive, instantaneous power. These are fundamentally different disciplines. The A 3100 HV uses its heritage to master the latter.

Leveraging the immense wealth of experience gained during the popular A 3000 HV’s ten-year production run, we refined the internal architecture to its absolute peak, integrated next-generation components, optimized PCB routing down to the millimeter, and took complete mastery over the thermal equilibrium of the chassis.

The result is our proprietary HV technology pushed to a new absolute by more than 270 effective changes and iterations. Configured in mono, it becomes a physical force. As a stereo amplifier, it offers unwavering stability and profound sonic truth. A newly integrated High Current Mode allows the amplifier to operate in true Class-A. This sustains the elevated idle current necessary to eliminate microscopic transient lag, translating the delicate geometry of a recording into a lightning-fast, deeply natural sonic experience.

It does not sing along, it gives the recording life.

Zero Reaction Time. Absolute Reality - High Current Mode

To preserve the absolute illusion of reality, a machine must never be caught reacting. The microsecond it takes for a conventional transistor to wake up and process a signal is the exact moment your brain detects something artificial. It is an electronic fingerprint that shatters the acoustic spell.

To ensure the A 3100 HV remains completely natural sounding, we dramatically elevated the quiescent current, pushing the output stages into an expanded Class-A operating range.

When in this mode, called High Current, the output transistors are constantly energized. They never hesitate.

When the sudden strike of a snare drum or the complex resonance of a cello demands instantaneous energy, the A 3100 HV does not need to wake up. It was already there. Because the amplifier is so fast, it unmasks the breathing, organic, natural warmth and dynamic expression in the recording.

Additionally, the established High-Power Mode can be selected, delivering 500 Watts of Class-AB power. This massive reserve is engineered specifically for demanding loudspeakers; driving them not just with power, but conducting them with absolute authority and effortless control.

Iso-Thermal Geometry – the eradication of drift

In conventional designs, thermal load can be the source of such fluctuations. It causes internal semiconductors to drift, subtly smearing the resolution and collapsing the soundstage as the listening session progresses. The machine fatigues, and the acoustic spell is broken. Hence, the A 3100 HV was engineered to be completely immune to its own power.

To achieve this, we did not simply add larger heatsinks to pour more heat into the room; we entirely rewrote the micro-geography of the amplifier. Developing and sourcing latest-generation tighter-tolerance sub-components opened crucial millimeters on the PCB. These allowed for an optimized layout defined by absolute thermal balance.

Heat is distributed with mathematical predictability across the isolated dual-mono boards. Simultaneously, integral thermal-tracking diodes monitor the bi-polar output transistors, locking them into a permanent, unyieldingly optimal operating point regardless of the momentary load or ambient temperature. Consequently, the amplifier achieves a state of thermal equilibrium.

The result is sonic consistency: Whether ten minutes into a listening session or deep into a Mahler symphony, the staging remains accurate. The dynamic grip doesn’t loosen. The machine refuses to break character, ensuring only the music can change, not the performance of the amplifier.

Compartment Matrix Design – everything in its place

Every monumental structure requires an unyielding foundation. To protect the purity of the audio signal, the entire high-current power circuit, output stages, and mains supply are strictly quarantined within their own heavily shielded vault. Separating this volatile energy from the delicate upper circuitry are massive walls of solid, precision-machined aluminum. It does not even attempt to manage electromagnetic interference; it blocks it with physical force.

This extreme spatial segregation gives space to the flawless, zero-compromise execution of a completely revised PCB topology. Voltage amplification and current amplification do not merely reside on separate boards—they occupy entirely distinct, physically isolated environments.

But physical boundaries are not enough. To achieve true sonic equilibrium, both stages have been galvanically isolated. The delicate, high-resolution voltage signals are completely immunized against the magnetic forces generated by the current gain stage.

The mathematical result of this uncompromising architecture is absolute control: There is no link between the currents driving loudspeakers and the voltage amplifier stages. Instead, there is complete freedom from loudspeaker loading effects. When the A 3100 HV unleashes its massive, high-bias transient power, the signal remains perfectly intact. The amplifier does not react to the loudspeaker; it commands it.

Amplification – controlled chaos

We believe that power without discipline is simply the sound of an amplifier struggling. To completely remove evidence of the machine from the listening experience, the A 3100 HV does not just amplify a signal; it shields it from its own violent energy.

The process begins in the voltage amplification stage, which must act as a flawless, invisible conduit. By utilizing an extremely linear, broad-band, cross-coupled differential cascode architecture paired with a single-ended Class-A large-signal stage, the music is translated with absolute structural integrity. The amplifier imparts no distracting footprint. It simply amplifies stage by stage without additional comment.

But preserving the fragile truth of the recording requires the brute force to deliver it to the loudspeakers without hesitation. The fully symmetrical current amplifier is the engine of this illusion. Fitted with advanced MOSFET drivers and the latest bi-polar output transistors, it effortlessly manages the massive energy demanded by our elevated idle current. Because the power delivery is so absolute, the amplifier never strains. It operates with a terrifying, silent stamina.

To ensure this immense power never corrupts the purity of the signal, a fundamental re-mapping of the machine's micro-geometry was required.

Moving far beyond mere component selection, the design harnesses physics to erase the amplifier’s internal footprint. Absolute, mirrored symmetry across the PCB routing—spanning all conductors, output stages, and the mains supply—enforces complete physical compensation for all signal currents.

No effort is wasted on filtering magnetic stray fields; they are mathematically canceled by their own opposing forces. Electromagnetic feedback into the isolated input stages becomes structurally impossible. The machine consumes its own noise. What remains is a background so breathtakingly black, the amplifier ceases to exist, leaving nothing but the performance.

Speaker Terminals

Massive transient power is useless if it is bottlenecked at the point of exit. The connection between the A 3100 HV and your loudspeakers is not handled by standard binding posts. It is governed by precision-machined conduits.

Each terminal is milled from a solid block of pure brass to ensure absolute structural rigidity under the weight of heavy-gauge acoustic cables. But the brass is merely the structural foundation. For signal conduction, every microscopic surface of the terminal is plated in pure rhodium.

We selected rhodium, the rarest of precious metals, because it bows to no physical compromise. It dictates the perfect transfer of energy. It possesses the raw, unadulterated conductivity of silver, the physical durability of platinum, and the absolute corrosion resistance of gold. It does not oxidize. It does not degrade. The electrical handshake between the amplifier and the loudspeaker remains permanent.

Power Supply – the source of everything

Everything matters, but the power supply matters most. To sustain the elevated idle current and Class-A operating range of the A 3100 HV, a conventional power supply is fundamentally inadequate. The foundation of this amplifier requires an unyielding, instantaneous energy reserve that physically cannot collapse under load.

At the core of the lower shielded vault lies a high quality 1,000-Watt toroidal transformer. It is not merely installed; it is entombed. Hermetically sealed and completely encased in a magnetic shield, it acts as a silent, high-performance reactor. Its stray fields are suffocated at the source, ensuring the violent magnetic energy required to generate this power never breaches the 10-millimeter aluminum horizon separating it from the audio signal.

But raw wattage does not dictate dynamic truth—speed does. Transient lag is eradicated through a proven power distribution topology that was first introduced in the A 3000 HV. Instead of relying on standard storage, the PCB layout houses an array of twelve oversized, next-generation electrolytic reservoir capacitors, wired in a precise parallel configuration.

This is the geometry of zero-latency response. By distributing the capacitance across twelve low-inductance, low ESR components, we mathematically decimated internal resistance.

Even though the internal power supply of the A 3100 HV already operates far beyond conventional standards, the laws of physics always allow for an even more uncompromising path. For system configurations demanding the absolute maximum—particularly when driving impedance-critical, power-hungry loudspeakers in High Power Mode—the addition of an external reference power supply unlocks the final dimension of control.

The integration of such an external powerhouse fundamentally transforms the architecture of the system. With its massive capacity, the external power supply exclusively assumes the task of feeding the current-hungry output stages. The internal power supply of the A 3100 HV is thereby entirely liberated from any macro-dynamic heavy lifting. From that moment on, it dedicates itself with stoic calm solely to the delicate input signals and the highly sensitive voltage amplification.

The A 3100 HV does not need to draw breath. When an orchestral crescendo or a synthetic bassline demands a gigantic, instantaneous delivery of current, the amplifier discharges it in fractions of a microsecond. The power supply does not sag. The soundstage does not compress. The amplifier simply commands the loudspeaker with terrifying, effortless speed thanks to everything involved in making the A 3100 HV - especially the power supply.
